Dover400, a committee of residents organizing Dover’s 400th Anniversary, continues its virtual lecture series on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at 7:00PM with an online presentation about Dover’s service during both World Wars.
“We Can Do It: The Garrison City Goes To War – Over There and on The Home Front”, will focus on many true tales of Dover citizens who fought in World War I and World War II, plus stories about those serving on the home front. Some of these stories will include: ration stamps, Victory Gardens, rolling bandages, War Bonds, strange aircraft, war production, wartime vacations, fingerprinting at Dover schools, “Alien Enemies”, and a secret Garrison City industry.
The lecture will share the words of a Dover soldier at Normandy, a Dover airman over Germany, a Dover student on horseback, and a Dover submariner in the Pacific. Life in the muddy trenches of Europe will be explained – all through a Garrison City connection during these world-changing events.
Mark Leno, a 26-year retired veteran of the Dover Police Department and author of several history books including The History of the Dover Police Department, The History of the Dover Housing Authority, and Factory on Fire, a history of the Cocheco Mill Fire of 1907. He has also helped to research, write, and act in several historical reveal events about Dover as fundraisers for Dover Main Street and the Woodman Museum. Leno is a former Board Member of the Woodman Museum and is presently writing a book on the history of The Mount Washington Hotel and tourism in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire.
Each Dover400 presentation is free and open to the public. The final lecture in Dover400’s monthly series will be a special movie event: “Voices From the Cemetery” which was filmed at Pine Hill Cemetery in the fall of 2020. This entertaining and educational film will be shown on December 14 at 7:00PM.
Dover400 is currently underway with two fundraising campaigns, “$400 for 400”, an effort to solicit 400 donors at $400 to celebrate Dover’s 400th Anniversary; and also “The 1623 Society” with membership available for a donation of $1623.
